Founded as Varo Money and operating as Varo Bank, N.A., it became the first consumer fintech company to receive a national bank charter in the United States (2020).

Varo does not offer a public developer API. Internally, Varo runs a federated GraphQL supergraph powering 9+ subgraphs and 88+ microservices, processing over 500 million monthly requests. Third-party integrations and consumer data access are available via Open Banking aggregators such as Plaid, which Varo uses natively to let customers link external accounts and export Varo data to external financial apps.
